Why Set up a VPN: The importance of using VPN

Why Set up a VPN? As technology advances everyday and more sophisticated methods, gadgets, gizmos, and pathways become feasible, the safety and security of users and data finds itself as the target of a reverse-effect arrow. Further development and deeper integration of the world as a unified entity through the internet and the worldwide web has increased the possibilities and opportunities that someone could exploit to achieve malicious intents. Recently, Facebook was the target of a hack that leaked the security keys of 50 million users. This is one of the key reasons why keeping yourself well protected and well prepared these days is extremely essential. One common way to do that is to use a VPN.

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a service which allows you to create a secure network virtually between devices. This new network is owned by a person or a group and is rendered inaccessible unless you have the requisite encryption keys, adding an extra layer of security to your connections. A VPN “extends” a private network over a public network and lets users connect and browse the internet through that private network. In simple terms, a VPN secures your network connection from outside access and allows anonymous browsing.

Alongside blocking external access, VPN allows geo-blocking and geo-simulation. This means you can block websites from accessing your location and also simulate a location different from your own to access area restricted content.

HOW TO SET UP? There are hundreds of services that have sprouted up which provide VPN services at varied price points. However, remember that a VPN is only as good as its provider. Choose it wisely and read all related terms and conditions and also read the user reviews on two to three different portals.
If you are using Windows 10 or any other modern operating system, chances are that a lot of VPN options are already available on your respective app store.
Once you have decided on a service which seems suitable, the process is fairly straightforward. If they provide an installer, you just need to download their installer and run it (preferably as an administrator). If you’ve created an account on a server and have got an IP address and server name etc. then you just need to set it up manually using your device’s inbuilt VPN connection interface.

  • To do that, simply type in VPN in the search bar of your operating system (usually accessible through the start menu) and you’ll find the “set up a VPN connection” option.
  • Open that and type the IP address or domain name of your chosen VPN server.
  • Next, use a user ID and password to log on to the server and save this info.
  • Now select the VPN server you have just created and connect to it to start safe browsing
